South Denali June 28th - 30th

If you like spectacular mountain views, the drive on Hwy 2 past Denali Nat. Pk. is a must see. The scenery is on par with all the great mountain drives we have been on. Unfortunately, most of the scenic pullouts are over grown and are not great for taking pictures. Here are a few I did take.

We ended up at K'esugi Ken St. Pk. K'esugi Ken is native for "the ancient one".

Talkeetna is 52 miles from our campground. Having heard of it in books we have read, we decided to take a look. Talkeetna is not on the main highway but the railway goes through it. Unbeknownst to us it is a real tourist trap. Tour buses and train loads of people. ugh. We were thinking of having lunch there but it didn't look like we would get anywhere near some place to eat. Fortunately, we were paying attention and noticed a few places on our way into town.

Cute little place, deli style and good food. We both had the Chili, they had lots of great looking sandwiches but we are sandwiched out, for now.

Just down from the turn to the campground is Denali view South. The mountain is about 43 miles from the view point. A lot closer that the 100 miles or so that the first photos were taken. Obviously, the weather was stunning.

There is a placard there that shows the peaks. I tried to take a picture in the same scale. Close I think.

Denali over my left shoulder.

We have been told that getting to see Denali is always a big gamble, I think we drew 5 Aces.

We are now in a RV Park just west of Palmer $ 69.00 for power and water. At least they have dump station.

I think we are headed for Whitter tomorrow.
