Fairbanks June 24th - 25th

 

The road from Delta Junction to Fairbanks was pretty good, just a few pot holes and frost heaves. The views, on the other hand, were not good. Somewhere around were I put the X on the map was a forest fire. This was our view for miles and miles. Smoke.
 Just before Fairbanks is the community of North Pole. The whole town is Christmas themed and although it did look cool, it also looked like a tourist trap. We did not stop. There was certainly nothing there that we needed, or wanted.

 Our chosen campground was about 30k North of Fairbanks, Whitefish Campground. Luckily, there was very little smoke up there.


These added a little colour to the creek side.
Next day, we headed into Fairbanks to replenish our supplies. To get a feel of the town, we drove downtown. Just our luck, there was construction all over the place, with detours. Enough of this, lets get to Costco and Walmart. Realizing that we were going to have to get all our stuff into the RV frig and freezer, we decided to head back to the trailer for lunch. It would give us just that much more room😀 It worked, we got it all in. 

On the way to the campground, you pass a viewing site for the Alaska Pipeline.



There is a geocache just around the corner from our campground at Olnes Pond. We set up the GPS and headed down a trail towards the cache. As we approached the coordinates, the mosquitoes almost carried us away. All thoughts of getting the cache were abandoned and we rushed back to the truck. We didn't think to put on bug spray, as the mosies had not been too bad to this point. We drove around Olnes Pond to discover that there were a multitude of campers around the lake. This is the first time we have seen lots of campers in one spot. Locals I think.
The weather has been very nice, low teens at night and mid to high twenties during the day. Quite often a thunder storm in the evening. It is trying that now. It is said that it is eight degrees higher than normal.
 
Next stop Denali.

    Great blog as usual, but it’s still June!! Sheesh, I thought I’d missed Lauren & Pat’s birthday for a minute 😊

Quesnel July 29th - 30th

 Ten Mile Lake PP is just north of Quesnel, we had stayed there on a previous trip. This is the only campground Pat could not recall, so we had to come back. Of coarse, it all came back to her as we drove down the entrance road. I haven't mentioned that most of these campgrounds have very few people in the  campground when we get there around one PM or so. This one was no exception. We found a nice spot and set up camp. Next day we went to Quesnel to check out the town. We have never stopped here all the times we have driven though. It is kind of spread out but not a bad town, they have everything you could want.  As it was Pat's birthday, she got to pick the place for lunch. Greek it was, souvlaki for her and baked spaghetti for me, both were very good. After lunch, we shopped around a bit and went back to camp. Next up Lac La Hache PP. Our route for the past few days. Lac La Hache July 31st - Aug 4th

 We arrived at Lac La Hache PP fairly early  so we had our pick of campsites, found one we liked and got set up. There are lots of big trees in the campground but spread out enough that you get lots of light. Our solar panels did not like the shade as much as we did, as it is finally hot in the afternoon. I have had to run the generator for two mornings now, the first time in three months.  Thursday, we went back to Williams Lake to do laundry, shopping and wash the truck, poor thing was filthy. Last time it got a hose down was Dawson City, I had to wash off the mud from the construction near Moose Creek.  Friday we went down to 100 Mile House and checked out the local Aero Clubs field. Paul Lake - Kettle River Rec Site Aug. 5th - Aug. 10th

 It is a nice drive from Lac La Hache to Paul Lake through hwy 24. Mostly we had our pick of sites, found one we liked and got set up. It was nice and warm, about 30deg, lots of solar for power. The trees are just high enough to give shade around the edges of the campsite. Just sat and read for the rest of the day. Tuesday, we went to Debbie's for lunch. Doug and Linda, from Whitehorse, were in town to pick up a new puppy from Pritchard. They were staying for most of the week. Phil, Sue and their grandson Jake, were there, they love the pool. Rob and Roberta from Salmon Arm dropped in as well. It was great to see everybody. After lunch, we went to Costco for propane and to resupply. Then Save On and back to camp.  Wednesday, we just hung around and basked in the sun. After we went in, we heard a crashing in the bush. No, not a bear, this guy.
